Volkswagen Revving Up To Become World’s Largest Number One Automaker

The Shanghai Securities News has reported that Volkswagen’s sales in China are expected to reach 800,000 units this year citing Su Weiming, Vice Executive President of Volkswagen for China as the source.

Su mentioned that for the first eight months of this year through August, VW China’s sales have increased by 28.8 percent year-on-year reaching nearly 600,000 units. Meanwhile, import orders for VW vehicles are also expected to exceed 10,000 units this year.

Additional news on Volkswagen but this time on the Wolfsburg-based automaker, it finally decided to join the competition for the world’s largest number one automaker. Europe’s largest automaker will be competing with the reigning world’s largest number one General Motors and Toyota Motors which is second in rank.

According to reports from Reuters, the Wolfsburg-based automaker has announced its desire to become the next world’s largest automaker by 2014 or 2015.

Michael Kern, Head of Sales and Marketing for the Volkswagen brand was quoted by the German industry magazine Auto Motor und Sport as saying: "We want to overtake Toyota in volumes and by profitability. In the next three years we are going to bring 12 new models to the market and we are going to expand our presence in the United States, Russia, India and other markets."

The German industry magazine also quoted unnamed company sources as saying that Volkswagen is planning to surpass Toyota in terms of production volumes by 2014 or 2015. At present, Volkswagen has already exceeded 6 million of manufactured vehicles and striving for more according to the Auto Motor und Sport.

And of course if Volkswagen plans of toppling down Toyota it has to prepare itself for a hybrid war since this is where the Japanese automaker really excels.

In an interview with Germany’s Automobilwoche, Volkswagen’s development head said that the company’s future models are to be built on hybrid-drive systems.

The introduction of the rear-engine small model Up! Concept at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show simply implies that Volkswagen will likely invest in both diesels, hybrids, and even on full electrics.  Automotive News also thinks that Volkswagen will offer both full and mild-hybrid formats.

Inside Volkswagen: Merger Talks and a Soft-Top Polo Cabrio at the Frankfurt

Volkswagen AG has recently announced its ongoing talks with MAN AG and Scania AB regarding a possible merger. Europe’s largest automaker has also denied previous reports that states that the merger talks have collapsed—reported Bloomberg.

Andreas Meurer, Volkswagen spokesman said via a telephone interview: "We are still in talks with both companies but there is no urgent need to reach a conclusion right away."

Likewise, it was also reported in the magazine Focus that the latest discussions were supposedly ended right after Scania Chief Executive Officer Leif Oestling insisted that the merged company should be under the control of Scania and must be based in Sweden. After having said that, no announcement of further talks was issued.

Ferdinand Piech, the Chairman of Volkswagen and MAN has been trying for weeks to convince the Sweden’s Wallenberg family, which is Scania’s second-largest shareholder to accept the deal, that is according to reports on Focus. Unfortunately, all the efforts of the VW’s big boss were all in vain.

Still on Volkswagen, the coachbuilder Karmann which is famous for its classic 1955 Karmann Ghia has presented a four-seater drop-top Polo Cabrio which showcased the firm’s newest folding-roof technology at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Aside from the folding-roof technology, the soft-top Polo Cabrio possesses GTI-inspired styling. The canvas top has two sliding glass sections at the front and rear to allow the fresh air into the cabin. These are operated separately from the roof while the rear window enables easy access to the boot as compared to any regular supermini cabrios. Other impressive features include the folding back seats, which extends to the luggage area without requiring for any intrusive body-strengthening structures.

This is made possible through the introduction of COPS or the Cabrio Overhead Protection System which employs fixed rollover bars behind the rear seats to improve crash safety as well as increase improve the structure of the vehicle. The Karmann’s system is also different from conventional roll bars in the sense that it’s lighter. However, the designers didn’t just content themselves with that, they perfectly took the VW’s proportions and then added extra length on the Polo’s tail by 130mm plus widen the track by 40mm.

At the front of the Cabrio is the trademark GTI black honeycomb grille while black alloy wheels with a striking red rim were placed all-round.

Mechanical changes were not that extensive but just to enhance the already aggressive look of the Polo Cabrio, its engineers have given it a new exhaust system with twin pipes mounted in the center of the bumper. The soft-top Polo Cabrio was produced to showcase the engineering expertise of Karmann.

Unfortunately, there are no plans yet of putting the soft-top Polo Cabrio into production despite the fact that the company has seen a strong demand for convertibles with fabric hoods. As a matter of fact even Audi and BMW has their own cloth-roofed versions namely the Audi A3 and BMW’s 1-Series respectively so hopefully Volkswagen will reconsider the ragtop Polo.

iCar: When, oh When?

The meeting between Apple Head Steve Jobs and Volkswagen Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn has aroused various speculations that an iCar is probably on the way. But of course no one really knows what these two heads have discussed but still rumors of the iCar circulated on the net. As a matter of fact when you search VW+iCar on the google search you will get at least 1 million plus entries which simply shows the level of interest it has gotten.

iSuppli has recently reported that if in case Apple and Europe’s largest automaker, Volkswagen really decide to produce an iPod-capable car or the iCar they will have to face serious challenges. But despite such, the move into cars present lots of opportunities for the Apple to further expand its iPod domain. On the part of Volkswagen it would benefit from the strong sales of such vehicle.

iSuppli further stated that the total automotive infotainment market is projected to be worth US$50 billion by 2012 that is according to analyst that says further that the vehicle production is growing at a steady 3 percent rate and will grow faster at a CAGR or Compound Annual Growth Rate of 8 percent between 2006 to 2013.

Richard Robinson, principal analyst, automotive electronics, for iSuppli explained that the difference between the two firm’s corporate cultures could present a serious problem that is despite the old cliché that says “opposites attract”. The cultural difference between Apple and Volkswagen may actually prove to be too wide to bridge.

Warranty is another problem that is seen since Apple has to support the vehicle throughout its usable life.

Robinson further stated as quoted by iSuppli: "Apple is a highly innovative and dynamic consumer electronics company that generates significant profits from living off its wits and supplying niche markets with the next big thing in music players, mobile phones and personal computers. VW, on the other hand, is from an entirely different tradition: the more conservative world of automotive, with its solid four-to five-year development cycles, tight margins and production-standard compliance requirements that would bring even the most enthusiastic designer from Cupertino to his knees."

Anyway, there are still no official statements coming from both Apple and Volkswagen so until that time comes the iCar would remain as a rumor.

Volkswagen’s New Beetle “Up”

It was almost seventy years ago since Volkswagen has created the original Beetle. Volkswagen which means “people’s car” in German was set up by the Nazis to build inexpensive cars for the German public.

It was Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, a brilliant designer who was tasked of creating a car that could carry two adults and three children costing only less than £50 which was then only half the price of other cars available on the market.

Adolf Hitler has given the go signal for the production of the Beetle in 1936. Unfortunately before production can commence, the World War II broke out and VW’s factory in Wolfsburg has switched to producing military vehicles.

The VW factory was ruined during the war and was rebuilt under the guidance of the British Army officers headed by Major Ivan Hirst.  Ten thousand vehicles were then produced in 1946. Afterwards the factory was offered to the British carmaker Rootes which has declined the offer by saying that the Beetle’s design doesn’t possess any special brilliance. To cut the story short the Beetle later on was given the nickname the “Bug” and later on become an icon of the 60s and became the world’s best-selling car in 1972 surpassing the Model T Ford in 1972.

Production later on was switched to Mexico in the year 1978 where the last original Beetle number 21,529,464 came off the line in 2003.

And today, Europe’s largest will once again relive the glory of the original Beetle by building another no-frills “People’s Car” for the 21st century.

The small 111/2foot-long four-seater will be unveiled on the eve of the Frankfurt Motor Show. And like the original Beetle of which more than 21 million were sold it will also have its engine in the rear with luggage space under the hood.

The new Beetle will cost around £4,000 in China, India and other developing countries while in Britain and Europe the car will cost about £5,000. For the West the new Beetle is likely to be offered with a three-cylinder petrol engine while a two cylinder engine is scheduled to be offered somewhere else.

This new Beetle will be named Up and is likely to be offered in both three and five-door guises and believe to have a ultra-frugal fuel consumption of 100 miles per gallon.

There are also reports stating that Apple is also working on an intelligent version of the car complete with wi-fi internet access. The car will be called the iCar that is according to German language magazine Capital reports.

Although the said car is still being discussed the Sueddeutsche.de has already reported the possible cost of the iCar which according to them is 6,500 euro.

Volkswagen’s Sales Results for August

In the news: Volkswagen of America has recently released the results of their August 2007 Sales with 21,655 vehicles sold representing a decrease of 7.5 percent from their August 2006 sales figure of 23,420. On a year-to-date basis Volkswagen brand vehicle sales has dropped by 3.6 percent through August.

The decline reflects that rapid fall of existing 2007 model year inventory in anticipation of the incoming 2008 offerings.

The entry level Rabbit was able to sell 3,074 units for August 2007 which is considered to be the second best month ever for the reinterpreted hatchback model. The award honors the most satisfying cars and trucks that are also affordable to own. The winners were chosen based on a combination of IntelliChoice.com cost of ownership data and AutoPacific’s customer satisfaction survey data.

According to Matthias Seidl, Volkswagen of America Chief Operating Officer, “Both of these vehicles are very deserving of this praise. Our commitment to making the safest and best-engineered vehicles at an affordable operating cost has shown through with these great cars.”

Auto Pacific surveys 38 product-focused attributes, generating a score between five and 25 with a possible maximum score of 950 which is normalized to 1000. This score is then combined with IntelliChoice.com’s seven scored attributes such as depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs and state fees resulting to the final score and ranking of the Motorist Choice Awards.

Winner of Volkswagen Diesel Heritage Search Revealed

The Volkswagen Diesel Heritage Search is finally over after Volkswagen of America has located the Volks diesel with the highest mileage in the US. And the winner is a 1986 Jetta Turbo Diesel owned by Syl Schmid of Blue Rock, Ohio with over 562,000 miles traveled.

Volkswagen of America and Byers Imports has verified the authenticity of the incurred mileage of the winning Jetta. And according to the gathered fuel and mileage records presented by Schmid the Jetta frequently delivered fuel economy fifty miles per gallon.

And according to Steve Keyes, Volkswagen Public Relations Director, "Mr. Schmid has a story that is like so many of our diesel owners; he loves the longevity of the engine and fuel economy that his diesel Volkswagen has delivered these last twenty years. Throughout all of entries that we received for our Diesel Heritage Search, we found many VW owners who were passionate about their cars and the economic benefits of the diesel engine."

The owner Mr. Schmid has originally leased the Jetta for three years before finally deciding of purchasing the vehicle. Then after twenty years and over half a million miles he is still proud of his Jetta’s drivetrain and muffler.

Mr. Schmid will receive a Touareg V10 TDI to drive for six months. Volkswagen has started its Diesel Heritage Search last March 2007 and has attracted more than 200 entries for the highest mileage and oldest operating US diesel Volkswagen vehicles.

The 1977 Rabbit owned by Clint Wilson of Tehachapi, California was chosen as the oldest diesel Volkswagen.

Volkswagen starting from its introduction of the 1977 Rabbit which is the first Volkswagen diesel has sold around 815,000 diesel vehicles. Aside from the currently offered diesel Touareg V10 TDI, Volkswagen has also announced the arrival of the 2009 Jetta and Jetta SportWagen which is scheduled on later part of 2008. These new Jettas will be equipped with a Clean Diesel TDI engine option.
