Teen Drivers: How Do You Teach Them?

VW vehicles are one of the favorite vehicles used by teenage drivers and these reasons are quite varied. And as a VW owner myself, I have been receiving offers from parents asking me if I could loan them my VW so the can teach their teens the skills of the trade.

But then, I would choose to refuse for I do love my VW and if they would like to teach their teens, they can get their own units. Anyhow, to do my share of helping out teach teens how to drive, I’ll be writing about some tricks on how you can successfully let your teenager be a responsible driver.

  • Before you start out with any lesson, make sure that your student has his (or her) very own learner’s permit. Or if not, make sure that the student has all other requirements needed for the training.
  • The teenager may have had to go through the classroom hours required before you can actually go ahead and take him (or her) right on the road. And make sure that before you do the actual driving, you go over the rules first.
  • It would be best to do your driving lessons in a parking lot that is empty or maybe even a driving course.
  • The basic pieces of information would help out your teenage driver a lot. So let your student learn about the basic duties of the parts of the vehicle - from the interior to the exterior. After you have done such, then go ahead and let the student rev up the engine. It would not hurt to keep on repeating. At least, you know that you are instilling the basics to your teen student driver.
  • Theories would not help out much so make sure that you also add in applications. Show your student just how these car parts work.
  • Then would be the time for you to take the passenger side and let the student make the engine shudder.
  • Guide them as they take on the feel of the brakes, the transmission shifts, and also the acceleration. Explain as you go along.
  • If the teen student makes some mistakes, don’t be afraid to correct them. If there is a need to provide some tips, then go ahead and do so. Any warnings while on the road should also be shared. And after everything else is done, summarize. At least, your student would not forget what he (or she) just learned.
  • Practice. And be there to guide your student.
