VW to sell “clean” technology in North America
Volkswagen is aiming to convince Americans to "go diesel" to the extent that it will not launch its new Tuareg BlueTDI in Europe.
Instead, VW will sell it in North America starting 2008.
The Tuareg BlueTDI is designed to meet the tough emissions standards of California and other states. It has a "selective catalytic reduction" or SCR system that reduces nitrogen-oxide emissions by up to 90 %.
The SCR system works by converting nitrogen oxide into its harmless components: nitrogen and oxygen. The system works in tandem with a diesel particulate filter and a conventional catalytic conventer to cut down further on emissions.
The system makes the Tuareg, according to VW, "one of the most cleanest diesel engines in the market."
