BMW’s Mini Cooper will have competitor, if Volkswagen’s plans push trough.
The European carmaker has announced that its planning a rear-engine compact car, according to a report from German car magazine Auto Bild.
The engine layout will dictate a rear-wheel-drive system, which is a rarity nowadays, especially in the world of modern compacts.
Aside from Porsche’s 911, few modern cars have their engines in the rear. Most cars use a mid-engine configuration; the rest are in the front. Even the iconic Beetle has made the engine switch - from the rear to the front.
